Modern manufacturing companies are struggling to fill key roles as they recover from the repercussions of the pandemic while facing a retirement surge amongst the Baby Boomer generation. This significant gap could result in 2.1 million unfilled jobs by 2030 potentially resulting in a loss of $1 trillion in 2030 alone*.  Manufacturers are also struggling to fill intermediate-level jobs that entail some level of technical training or applied skills. Fortunately, coalitions of manufacturers have joined forces and are working toward a solution.

The Texas Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (TX FAME) will be kicking off its first cohort for the new South-Central chapter in August of 2022. FAME is an “earn as you learn” workforce development program that utilizes manufacturing core competencies, intensive professional practices and intentional hands-on experience to develop entry-level, college-ready students into future leaders of the modern manufacturing industry. Practice areas include electrical, robotics, fluid power, mechanics, fabrication, industrial troubleshooting and more. Students can also expect lessons that tackle the Manufacturing Core Exercises and Professional Behaviors.

To become a sponsoring manufacturer, companies will need to provide Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) students with two years of valuable work experience and hands-on instruction, which will lead to the hiring potential of an educated and trained employee who is now equipped with the skills and experience necessary to not only succeed in the workforce but thrive! Ultimately, AMT graduates will receive an associate degree with at least 60 credit hours and earn 1,800 hours of on-the-job, paid work experience and training that will launch their careers as manufacturing technicians. This is achieved by students working three days a week and attending class two days a week. Upon graduation AMTs will be multiskilled in more than technical ability, but also professional behaviors and practices.
