October is Manufacturing Month, a time to celebrate and promote the manufacturing industry’s vital role in the economy. To commemorate this, Schertz Economic Development Corporation (EDC) collaborated with Steele High School to organize an eye-opening trip to Caterpillar Inc.’s facility. This visit was an opportunity for high school seniors and juniors to gain firsthand insight into manufacturing engines and discover the exciting career prospects Caterpillar can offer.

Caterpillar Inc. is a renowned global manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. With over 90 years of history, Caterpillar has established itself as an industry leader, creating cutting-edge technologies that power the world’s infrastructure. By visiting the Caterpillar facility, students were able to witness the impact of their innovations firsthand.

The trip began with a warm welcome at Caterpillar, where students were introduced to the company’s history, values, and its commitment to sustainability. They learned about the importance of manufacturing in today’s world, and how Caterpillar’s products play a pivotal role in shaping the future of construction and transportation.

One of the highlights of the trip was the comprehensive tour of Caterpillar’s manufacturing facility. Students were taken behind the scenes to observe the intricate process of crafting diesel engines. The sight of massive machines and the precision of the assembly lines left a lasting impression on the students. This hands-on experience brought to life the theoretical knowledge gained in classrooms.

Caterpillar’s representatives engaged with the students, sharing personal experiences and insights into various career paths within the company.  The students were enlightened about the different educational paths Caterpillar values, which includes not only traditional four-year degrees but also certifications, apprenticeships, and vocational programs. This was a pivotal moment for students, as it broadened their perspectives on career possibilities and the various avenues available.
