On January 25, 2022, the Schertz City Council passed an enabling ordinance to participate in the State of Texas Enterprise Zone Program (EZP), a sales tax rebate program provided by the state to help communities secure locations and expansions of new economic development projects.  The goal of the EZP is to enhance the competitiveness of the City of Schertz to secure jobs and investments through the nomination of qualifying projects to the state Enterprise Program.

The State EZP helps to secure the expansion of new economic development projects by providing local jurisdictions the ability to nominate projects to be considered for State of Texas sales tax refund for qualifying expenditures based on the number of good-paying jobs and sales taxes paid.

The Schertz Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) can now work with local companies seeking to expand by providing local tax incentives as well as the new authority to nominate local projects for Enterprise Project Nomination. Projects and companies nominated for a State EZP Designation must meet minimum capital investments thresholds and/or retain jobs that employ a certain percentage of economically disadvantaged individuals, enterprise zone residents, or veterans.

In an era where Texas leadership is working diligently to recruit new businesses, the passing of the ordinance by Schertz leadership to participate in the EZP is timely.  This action has the ability to continue to propel economic development opportunities and maximize all of the tools available to support business expansions. Schertz continues to experience impressive, yet thoughtful growth and expansion, with a proven history of having attracted Fortune 500 companies including  Caterpillar, Amazon, FedEx, and small and medium manufacturers.

For the past twenty-five years, through the dedicated leadership of Schertz and the SEDC, the region has experienced robust economic development. With participation in the EZP, Schertz is now, more than ever, positioned for the creation and retention of jobs and infrastructure development offered through the value and benefits of the State Enterprise Zone Program. It’s a notable growth milestone not only for the City of Schertz, but for the broader region.
