On June 8th, the Schertz EDC caught a glimpse into a week-long STEM KAMP. STEMKAMP which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics for Kids of Active Military Personnel, offers 3RD-8TH grade students at military connected schools, the opportunity to embark on a fun, immersive hands-on five-day summer camp where they can explore STEM activities that will spark their passion for a future in STEM careers. The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal Citys ISD’S (SCUC ISD) was lucky enough to be invited for a third year by the U.S. Department of Defense’s DoDSTEM program to host the camp from June 5th-9th at Steele High School in Cibolo. Schertz-Cibolo is only one of ten locations in the country and the only one in south Texas that provides this amazing opportunity for our local students.

This year, the STEMKAMP theme is Disaster Masters, where they will focus on natural and man-made disasters and learn the scientific reasoning on how and why they occur. Students will be asked to put on their critical thinking hats and use their problem-solving skills to design, create, utilize and record their experiments. The experiments are meant to produce the effects of earthquakes, hurricanes, meteor strikes and oil spills.

Of course, every future scientist or engineer needs a break from the lab, so they will have the opportunity to visit Randolph Air Force Base where they will learn about bird strikes, the Scobee Planetarium for a deep dive into outer space, the San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology and a very rare Toyota Plant tour.

The Schertz Economic Development Corporation wants to thank the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD (SCUCISD) for inviting us to witness this innovative program and to acknowledge our shared goal of getting our kids into these industries. Our region is dedicated and prepared to mold ourfuture workforce with these new and unique opportunities like STEM KAMP.
